After a significant amount of help from NARA folks in the DC area with Edward Gause's Mexican War Service Records, low and behold, his father John Gause is listed as a Captain at Ancestry.com on one of his wife Flora's death tax cards.  A recent re-check of Fold3 yielded John's service listing with a unit in the NC Militia during the 1812 War so guess who is asking NARA for a little more help?  Your's truly and I will post what comes back from Trevor and his team when it arrives.  Delightedly awaiting that good news.

NOV 2012
 - Discovered 2nd great grandfather Edward Gause attended Kenyon University with later President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1838-9 and NOT later U.S. President James A. Garfield as family lore and the book "the History of Houston County, Texas" both alleged.
